About Lost Ark

Lost Ark is a top-down 2.5D fantasy massively multiplayer online action role-playing game (MMOARPG). It is co-developed by Tripod Studio and Smilegate's game development subsidiary Smilegate RPG. It was fully released in the South Korean region on December 4, 2019. The game was also released in North America, South America, and Europe on February 11, 2022, where it is published by Amazon Games. Within twenty-four hours of release, it became the second most played game on Steam. Lost Ark won six game awards in various categories at the Korea Game Awards 2019. Developing the game cost about $85.4 million.

Story

I. The dawning age

The god Regulus brings order and light to balance the darkness of chaos and creates worlds to embody each: Arkesia and Petrania. The order of the light is powered by the Ark, split seven ways for seven gods and spread across Arkesia. When the two worlds nearly destroy each other the Guardians are created to restore peace.

II. Rule of Darkness

While Arkesia prospers with the power of the Ark, Petrania embraces chaos until Kazeros, Lord of the Abyss, emerges to establish a dark order. He creates the Red Moon to imitate the sun, kills off most of the other demons, and forms an army of demon legions. The prophecy of another rift is nigh.

In the absence of gods, the Sacrian Order seeks the collective power of all seven pieces of the Ark. This triggers a world war that awakens the Guardians. The Guardians restore peace and punish the Order and their allies, but not before a dimensional rift opens up. Kazeros invades Arkesia through the rift and establishes a reign of chaos. Finally, the Ark is used to close the rift and imprison Kazeros beneath a volcano. The seven pieces of the Ark are spread across the seven continents again as peace returns to a battered world.

In the wake of Kazeros' catastrophic invasion, the world rebuilds with new factions and nations, led by the glorious war hero Luterra. The split Ark leaves behind a scarce and powerful mineral: Arkesium, quickly hoarded and used for weaponry. But, mostly, peace reigns for nearly 500 years.

The current peace in Arkesia is threatened by the ancient and long-forgotten evil of chaos. The volcano imprisoning the most dangerous enemy this world has ever known, Kazeros, is about to erupt. Begin your adventure in a world on the brink of war...

Setting

Set in the familiar world of Sanctuary, your adventure begins in Wortham, where you’ll journey through an unholy forest to the town center. You’ll hunt the shards of the Worldstone through the undead-overrun Ashwold Cemetery, the cursed forests of the Dark Wood, beneath the sands of the Shassar Sea, among the hellish wetlands of the Bilefen, and beyond. All the zones feature unique horrors, quests, and loot, and once explored, they are easily accessible via another Diablo staple - waypoint teleportation.

Gameplay

Diablo Immortal is an always online game that you can either play solo, or group up with - or face off against! - other adventurers that you encounter as you explore the world. You will be taking the roles of six possible classes - Barbarian, Wizard, Monk, Demon Hunter, Crusader and Necromancer - with more classes planned in the future.

Each zone can host dozens of other players with whom you can join forces to tackle large-scale zone events and special quests that require multiple participants. If you encounter anyone you want to adventure with, you have the option to create a party of up to 4 players to continue the fun, or to form a guild to create lasting bonds and unlock even more social activities.

Outside of the Campaign, which is meant to introduce you to the world of Sanctuary and its current perils, Diablo Immortal features a robust and varied endgame, which can be roughly subdivided into the following categories: Bounties, World Events, Elder Rifts, Challenge Rifts and Dungeons.

  • Bounties are limited daily tasks that take you across the world of Sanctuary, pitting you against alterations of its campaign content from the various zones: artifact hunting, ingredient gathering, landmark investigating, and other interactions that invariably end in a brawl against the hordes of Hell.
  • Rifts are one of Diablo Immortal’s most replayable endgame modes: step through one, and tackle ferociously difficult monsters in a randomly generated map on a time limit. They're a goldmine of loot and an opportunity to test yourself. Challenge Rifts let you prove your skills and earn rewards the first time you complete each difficulty level. You’ll also acquire rewards based on your placement on the weekly Challenge Rift leaderboard. Elder Rifts can be modified for increased variety and rewards with Crests: a stackable, Rift-specific item new to Diablo Immortal. Using Crests, random modifiers will be added to your Rift that can add positive or negative effects to your next run. Moreover, the increased effort yields greater rewards for the entire party—using a rare Crest will guarantee a Rune drop, and a Legendary Crest will guarantee that everyone receives a Legendary Gem.
  • Dungeons are prime to explore for loot and lore, as well as progressing through the main story. Dungeons in Diablo Immortal can be completed in 10-15 minutes (solo or in a party), and they are filled with monsters, gear and items. They also hold answers to some of the greatest mysteries hidden in Sanctuary’s past.

Business Model and Pricing

Diablo Immortal will be free-to-play with optional in-app purchases. Blizzard plan on supporting Diablo Immortal with a constant cadence of free content, including new gear, features, classes, stories, and areas to explore. They also want to make sure every purchase feels fair and is guided by a clear set of values that place an emphasis on the player experience for all players.

The primary of these values is putting gameplay at the forefront. Core mechanics are designed to be fun first, and developers have stated that purchases should never circumvent Diablo’s core gameplay of killing demons and getting gear. They have also stated their intent for a pathway to earn most things a player can pay for. Critically, the only way to acquire gear is by playing the game.

Second, they want to provide purchase options that feel worthwhile and deepen the player's engagement and enjoyment of the game, and where possible the enjoyment of other players as well. Purchases are not meant to detract from the gameplay experience.

Third, purchases are intended to feel like a bonus, and to be entirely optional to enjoy Immortal. The core Diablo Immortal game experience will always be free, and players should be able to enjoy the game for hours on end whether or not they choose to spend money.

Platforms and Supported Devices

The goal of the Diablo Immortal team is to bring epic Diablo gameplay to as many devices and players as possible. The Diablo Immortal Technical Alpha was playable on Apple devices and Android devices and had the following minimum requirements:

  • RAM - 2GB of RAM and higher
  • Version: Android OS 5.0 (Lollipop) and higher

  • Version: iOS 12 and higher

Release Date

While a technical alpha of an impressively feature-complete version of the game ran for a limited number of players at the end of 2020 and gives some hope for a release date before the end of 2021, Blizzard are adamant that they have no release date to announce yet.

Trailers and Videos

There are several videos officially released by the Diablo Immortal team. The first is the gameplay trailer revealed at BlizzCon 2018.

The second is a "development update" revealed during BlizzCon 2019, while the latest one is a slightly different version of the previous gameplay trailer, revealed during ChinaJoy 2020 (video courtesy of Blizzard Watch).

The Alpha Developer Update was quite important and brought with itself a lot of clarity about the current state of the game, as well as the plans of the team for the near future.
